Objective:
Increase the strategic technology direction of the law firm, reduce IT expense, and raise network quality and availability.
Situation:
Clark, the managing partner for technology, was faced with an opportunity. His IT manager had put in his notice. Clark had been happy with his IT manager’s job, but wondered if he could reduce his IT expense, and at the same time increase the quality of the network. The staff was used to having someone on site 8 to5, Monday thru Friday, and Clark was concerned about that, as well. Before jumping into an immediate IT hire Clark decided to see what services might be available to him.
Resolution:
Clark interviewed Blue Ocean and after a network evaluation and a number of meetings, Clark and Blue Ocean decided to partner. Blue Ocean did a more thorough evaluation and found a number of areas in the data network that were substandard. Blue Ocean began to monitor DFY’s network 24/7. Blue Ocean laid out a strategic technology upgrade path for Clark. Next, Blue Ocean began a systematic approach to getting DFY’s data network up to date. All software was brought to the latest revision levels, and a new firewall and anti-virus was installed. A new backup plan was implemented. A new server was installed and a staged approach to upgrading PC’s at the desktop level was created. Blue Ocean also trained the DFY staff to help them understand the proper use of meta-tags in documents. After a year the staff is now accustomed to not having an onsite IT manager, Clark is happy because he believes his network is being managed more effectively, and the firm decreased their overall IT expense by almost half.
